Rhys Clift



Rhys is a Partner in the London office and a member of the Shipping and Insurance Group. Rhys has over 30 years’ experience in commercial litigation and arbitration, specialising in marine and non-marine (re)insurance, maritime casualties, such as groundings, explosions, fires and structural failures, as well as kidnap & ransom, political violence and offshore construction. He has a particular interest in crisis management and cyber hazard. Rhys is an active commercial mediator and a listed Distinguished Neutral at CPR in New York.

Rhys has been highlighted and praised in the Legal 500 for disputes on contracts of carriage, as well as insurance and reinsurance disputes.


Rhys is the author of “Mediation in England and Wales” first edition published in 2010, and the principal architect and co-author of “Alternative Dispute Resolution in Practice”, published by the IIL in 2011.

Rhys joined Thomas Cooper in May 2018 from Hill Dickinson where he spent 36 years in the Shipping and Insurance departments. Rhys was Managing Partner of Hill Taylor Dickinson between 1999-2003. He has a law degree from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth and a postgraduate degree from the University of Aix/Marseille. Rhys is fluent in French.
